Apel Steel was founded in 1986 in response to a need for steel manufacturers in the greater Alabama area. The first several years were spent fabricating material for Walmart retail stores. During that time period, Walmart became our “bread and butter” account.  Eventually, we began to branch out and supply materials for other client projects. These included Lowe’s, Home Depot, Kohl’s, Target, Dick’s Sporting Goods, shopping centers, Academy Sports, Tanger outlet malls and many more.

Today, Apel Steel is a thriving business with national reach providing quality structural steel and finished products to major stores like Office Max, Toys-R-Us, Bed Bath & Beyond, Marshall’s and Trader Joe’s along with smaller clients building warehouses and custom design-build projects.

Apel Steel produces quality structural steel building members. Our shop fabricates material for projects of all different types and sizes. From simple to complex jobs, we can adjust our process to meet each client’s individual needs.

We fabricate beams, angle, flat bar, embeds, plate, channel, columns, lintels and tubing. Members can range from simple pieces to more intricate designs. Our products are used in a wide variety of construction applications. Along with structural steel, we also build ornamental units like stairs, handrails, balconies and gates. Additionally, we produce steel joists and metal roof decking.

Apel Steel can run multiple jobs concurrently to effectively meet high volume client deadlines.

All material can be painted, galvanized or left as unfinished metal. Projects can range from fabrication only or fabrication plus erection – we work with several reliable subcontractors who can efficiently assemble both large and small projects.

Apel Steel operates two plant buildings. Our main shop is 80,000 sq ft. The specialty shop where handrails, stairs and other miscellaneous items are built is 40,000 sq ft.

Fabricating equipment includes automated angle and beam lines, band saws, press brake, shear and ironworkers.  There are 10 overhead cranes with 3-10 ton capacities and forklifts with up to 20,000k capacity.  All welders and machinists are professionally trained within their specific disciplines.

Our detailing department employs the latest in equipment and technology. This innovative equipment allows Apel Steel the flexibility to manufacture unique products for an ever-changing global market. Assembly is completed by independent erector companies. Apel Steel can recommend qualified subcontractors to work with you onsite when the fabricated steel is delivered. We’ve even supplied products for a Home Depot project in Hawaii and a shopping center in Puerto Rico.
